STATEMENT ON HAITI.
May 20 2004

As a Pan-African organization dedicated to the African Liberation, the Group for Research and Initiative for the Liberation of Africa (GRILA-Toronto) is deeply concerned over the plight of our Haitian brothers and sisters currently under occupation of foreign forces working in collusion with comprador elites, installed in power by the recent US-backed coup in Haiti that ousted the democratically elected government of Jean Bertrand Aristide. The ongoing occupation, in addition to the historical exploitation of the people of Haiti, has caused immense human suffering and has plunged this heroic nation into political turmoil, terror, oppression and destitution.
Upon winning freedom from enslavement, the People of Haiti were forced to pay for their freedom through the punitive loans imposed on Haiti by the former French enslavers. This resulted in the illegitimate $1.2 billion debt that has led to mass impoverishment in Haiti. Today, the People of Haiti continue to suffer under the impact of US imperialism, neo-liberalism and the dictates of corporate globalization. GRILA-Toronto condemns these exploitative, oppressive, dehumanizing processes and calls for viable alternatives to neo-liberal globalization in Haiti and beyond.
Further, GRILA-Toronto denounces the recent atrocities perpetrated by US-backed mercenaries in Haiti and directed against innocent civilians, culminating in the imperialist-driven coup and subsequent occupation of Haiti. In solidarity with the people of Haiti and all peace loving peoples of the world, and for the immediate restoration of the sovereignty and national integrity of Haiti, GRILA demands the following:
• Immediate end to the current occupation in Haiti.
• Complete and immediate withdrawal of foreign forces from Haitian territory including the occupying forces from the United States, France and Canada.
• International condemnation of US policy of regime change in the region and its acts of aggression directed at Cuba and Venezuela.
• Full restoration of Haitian Sovereignty, self-determination for the People of Haiti and respect for the inalienable rights of Haitians to determine their political future through democratic processes.
• Reinstatement of the democratically-elected government of Jean Bertrand Aristide.
• Reparations for the people of Haiti for the crimes of slavery, imperialism, historical exploitation and oppression.
• An independent international inquiry as demanded by CARICOM, to investigate the circumstances surrounding the ouster of President Aristide from power.
• Indictment of all war criminals implicated in recent and past atrocities in Haiti to face an International War Crimes Tribunal for Haiti, including the coup leaders in Haiti and their foreign accomplices; American, French and Canadian government and military officials, who instigated, encouraged, backed and financed the recent bloody coup in Haiti.
• Elimination of all forms of anti-black racism and racial profiling directed at Haitian communities in the United States, Canada and globally.
• Immediate cessation of illegal detentions and deportations in the West of Haitians displaced by imperialist occupation and western corporate interests.
GRILA - Toronto calls upon the Global African community, the international solidarity movement and all progressive forces around the world to stand up for Haiti, fight the ongoing imperialist occupation in Haiti, demand viable alternatives to corporate globalization in Haiti and for the Haitian people to determine their political destiny.
Long Live the Haitian Revolution. AMANDLA!!!!!!
